Hunting was limited to private land within your assigned unit, and PLOTS land was excluded.

PLOTS stands for Private Land Open To Sportsmen, North Dakota’s walk-in access program. During this season, hunting PLOTS land is prohibited except by the enrolled landowner.

Hunters who secure private permission early do best in this season. To hunt it next August, start lining up access well before it opens.

Archery Season: Closed for 2026

Archery season ran September 4–27 in E1E, E1W, E2, E6, and E7. You hunt only the unit and elk type printed on your license.

Early season can be hot, but elk are generally less pressured than they will be once the gun seasons begin. Hunters who plan for warm days and early-morning movement tend to do best.

Regular (Gun) Season by Unit: Open Now

The regular season runs September 4, 2026, through January 3, 2027, depending on your unit. Know the boundaries, stay inside your unit, and get landowner permission before you cross private ground.

Post-rut elk tend to move less. Later in the season, they often bunch up near ag fields and sheltered coulees, so glassing those edges can pay off.

Late Antlerless Season (January 9–17, 2027): Upcoming

The late antlerless season runs January 9–17, 2027, in units E1E, E1W, E2, E3, E4, E6, and E7. You may use any legal archery equipment or firearm, you must stay in your assigned unit, and orange clothing is required.

A nine-day window concentrates hunting pressure and makes access the main constraint, which the private land section below addresses. Cold-weather preparation matters too, and the tips section covers it.

North Dakota Elk Licenses and Permits

Elk licenses come only through a resident lottery. Securing access ahead of time gives you room to scout and hunt without scrambling.

Leasing gives you exclusive or limited access for a season. Before you sign, clarify these points:

Whether the property fits the unit on your license.

Where the boundaries run.

Which methods are permitted.

That the lease dates cover your season, including January 9–17.

How to respect the landowner’s operation.

Buying land gives you long-term access, including for future draws and other species. Nonresident land buyers still can’t hunt elk, but they can hunt deer and other species on their own land.

Hunting Locator connects hunters with landowners who lease or sell land, so you can search by state, game type, or acreage in one place. Sign up with Hunting Locator to start connecting with landowners. You can also browse North Dakota hunting leases to see what is currently listed, from Badlands-area acreage to western ranch properties. Connect with landowners before your late-season window.

Guided Hunts

A guide can help when time, terrain, or access is tight. A guided hunt makes sense if:

You’re unfamiliar with your unit.

You have limited scouting time.

You need help with outfitter:

Do they have access in your specific unit, and is it private or public?

Do their dates fit your season?

Who references?

Elk Hunting Tips

These are widely accepted practices for North Dakota elk country.

Glass before you walk: Spot-and-stalk works in open Badlands terrain, and quality optics let you find elk before they find you.

Hunt the edges late: Elk often bunch near ag fields and sheltered coulees after the rut.

Play the wind: Open country carries scent a long way, so keep the wind in your favor on every approach.

Know your unit lines: Use a mapping app to confirm you are inside your assigned unit and on land you have permission to hunt.

Dress for brutal cold: January brings wind and low temperatures, so build a layering system with real wind protection.

Plan meat care: Field dress quickly, and bring packs, game bags, and a transport plan.

Follow reporting and tagging class="wp-block-heading">FAQ

Can nonresidents hunt elk in North Dakota?

No. North Dakota elk licenses are for residents only, so nonresidents can’t apply. Nonresidents do have other options, including the North Dakota deer guide and the bighorn sheep guide, since nonresidents are eligible for bighorn.

When is the 2026 North Dakota elk gun season?

The regular season opens September 4 in E3, E4, and E5, and October 2 in E1E, E1W, E2, and E7, and runs through January 3, 2027. Unit E6 is split, with hunting October 2 – November 5 and November 23 – January 3.

How much does a North Dakota elk license cost?

An adult license is $35 and a youth license (15 and younger) is $10. You also pay the $5 nonrefundable application fee, the $2 certificate, and the $20 General Game and Habitat License. The total for an adult is $62.

What is the elk bag limit in North Dakota?

The limit is one elk of the type or antler restriction printed on your lottery license. You can only hunt the unit and elk type assigned to you.

What are legal elk hunting hours?

Legal hours run from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset. These hours apply across the regular and late seasons, so plan your morning approach and evening pack-out around them.

Is the North Dakota elk license once-in-a-lifetime?

Yes. Elk lottery licenses are issued as once-in-a-lifetime licenses, and hunters who have received one through the lottery are not eligible to apply for elk again. That makes careful planning especially important.

When is the late antlerless elk season?

The late antlerless season runs January 9–17, 2027, in units E1E, E1W, E2, E3, E4, E6, and E7. You may use any legal archery equipment or firearm, and orange clothing is required.

Can I hunt PLOTS land during the antlerless season?

Not during the early antlerless season in August and September, which is limited to private land and excludes PLOTS except for the enrolled landowner. Check the proclamation for the rules that apply in January.

When do 2027 elk applications open?

Applications have historically opened in late March, and the 2026 deadline was March 25. Watch gf.nd.gov for the official 2027 dates.

What can I hunt if I didn’t draw an elk tag?

Residents have other options. See the pronghorn guide, which is resident only, along with the waterfowl, game bird, and turkey guides.

The Final Shot

Gun seasons are open now, your license is tied to a specific unit and elk type, and the late antlerless window runs January 9–17. The 2027 lottery is expected in spring. Before you head out, verify every detail against the ND Game and Fish proclamation.

Access matters as much as the date. Secure it for January, or line it up well ahead of the 2027 draw. Find North Dakota elk access today, or connect with landowners on Hunting Locator.

This North Dakota Elk Season Guide for 2026 covers the dates, units, licenses, and access options for the hunt.

[4
45,68,10,16
post-8693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hunting-seasons","tag-elk-hunting","tag-hunting","tag-hunting-seasons","tag-season-dates
["GET
