info

Hunting in the state of Illinois is a great activity to participate in. Being in the Midwest, it is a perfect area for hunting game. The most popular wild game hunted within the state of Illinois include, deer, turkey, and small game including migratory waterfowl and birds, and numerous furbearers. These make up the majority of hunt-worthy game found in the state and make up an immense proportion of Illinois’ overall wildlife. Although hunting is legal, each individual must obtain their own hunting license to be able to capture these Illinois hunts.

To obtain an Illinois hunting license, an individual can be a resident or nonresident of the State of Illinois. As well, for first-time hunters, the state provides a special “Apprentice License”. This particular license is to extend temporary hunting privileges to the beginning hunters, however, an individual who has a valid Illinois hunting license must also supervise them. An Illinois hunting license must be purchased, except for the few individual exemptions. Additionally, anyone born after January 1, 1980 must carry a copy of their Hunter Safety Education Certificate while hunting.

Depending on the type of species one is hunting, the seasons may vary. For deer hunting, which tends to be the most popular, the season runs from September to January. Individuals are allowed to hunt on public areas around the state, as well as areas that are controlled by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, but an additional fee for that permit may be needed. Also, one can hunt on private property, with the permission of the landowner.
